Sea of Solitude Platinum: Shooing Seagulls and Shellfish Demons

Collecting PlayStation trophies is one of my favourite video game hobbies. I enjoy recording my trophy journeys in the form of scrapbook articles on Strength in Sarcasm because why not! Here’s the details on my Sea of Solitude platinum quest.

SPOILER WARNING in case I need to say it. I’ll be talking about all the game’s trophies, which includes plot ruining details if you haven’t played the game yet.

Trophy Unlocks 1-10

Trophy 1: Fire!

Official Description: “Fired the first flare”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1412

Sea of Solitude starts off with Kay waking up on a boat in the middle of the sea. A floating girl guides you along the journey and teaches Kay how to fire flares. These show you which way to go when you’re unsure where the objective is.

Trophy 2: Connected

Official Description: “Connect with mirror Kay for the first time”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1413

Shortly into the self-reflective quest Kay runs into a really cranky depression demon with a shell on her head. This shell-fish bitch (see what I did there) calls Kay a ‘worthless piece of shit’ and blocks the way forward. Aligning yourself with the illuminated mirror Kays in the area shoots a beam of light that pwns the demon.

Trophy 3: Uncorked

Official Description: “Collected your first Message in a bottle”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1414

Messages in bottles are one of the two collectible thingys in this one. What game doesn’t have collectibles these days?

Trophy 4: Shoo!

Official Description: “Shooed your first Seagull”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1415

Pesky seagulls are the second collectible thingy. I live in a coastal area and I’ll just say these rats with wings definitely deserve the shooing, else your car gets a pooing.

Trophy 5: Seeker

Official Description: “Fired 30 flares”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1416

Yep! I got lost a lot so many a flare was fired.

Trophy 6: Moses

Official Description: “Opened a path through water”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1417

One area required Kay to part the water to move forward. So freaking cool!

Trophy 7: School‘s out

Official Description: “Made it through school”
Type: Bronze
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1418

Kay encounters her little brother Sunny, who’s now in the form of a giant demon bird. She goes through his school full on bully demons. Sunny was apparently bullied quite a bit. Kay feels guilty for ignoring him when he needed her support the most.

Trophy 8: Runaway

Official Description: “Travelled very far by foot”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1419

With all the focus on sailing I found it odd I got the trophy for walking a lot first.

Trophy 9: Sunny

Official Description: “Finished Level 1”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1420

Kay eventually heals Sunny and helps him pwn the bully demons. He returns to his human form and a houseboat leads Kay to the next area.

Trophy 10: Sailor

Official Description: “Travelled a long distance by boat”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1421

Pretty sure it would be impossible not to get this trophy. Maybe if you swam everywhere! I doubt the game let’s you do that though.

Trophy Unlocks 11-20

Trophy 11: Lonely at the top

Official Description: “Reached top of the Skyscraper”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1422

The theme of the next area is sorting through the trauma Kay has from her parents fighting all the time. The Skyscraper was a bit of pain to climb. One of my least favourite things in the game, for sure. At the top Kay’s dad in demon-toad form launches her into the next area.

Trophy 12: Mama and Papa

Official Description: “Finished Level 2”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1423

The level concludes with Kay trying to stop her parents. Her mom’s demon form kinda looks like a medusa head. At the end Kay is knocked unconscious. Her parents are super concerned about her and return to their human forms to help Kay continue. Once again the houseboat takes her forward.

Trophy 13: Breakdown

Official Description: “Finished Level 3”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1424

The frozen heart of an ex-love is represented almost too perfectly in the next zone. Here Kay encounters a shiny wonderous wolf who soon cracks into a dark demon dog. This demon dog represents her ex-boyfriend. He threw her out of his life because he was dealing with his own depression demons.

Kay completely lost herself giving everything she had to try and help him. Now she feels like she is less than nothing without him in her life. Ouch.

Trophy 14: Resolve

Official Description: “Finished the game”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1425

The conclusion is so freaking heartwarming. Kay let’s go of everything and embraces her demons in a loving group hug. Then she wakes up in the waters of the real world, back in her normal human form. You get to see the credits as she walks along the beach of a beautiful island.

Trophy 15: Human Bait

Official Description: “Eaten by Whale 20 times”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1426

Once you beat the game you can jump back to different points in the story. I feel kinda bad making for Kay get eaten by the whale demon several more times to earn this trophy. Yay for failing awards!

Trophy 16: Danger swimmer

Official Description: “Swam long distance while whale was around”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1427

I cheesed this one since I was tired of getting eaten by the whale demon. There’s a sneaky spot the demon can’t get to and I swam around there until the trophy popped.

Trophy 17: Mermaid

Official Description: “Swam a very long distance”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1428

More swimming trophies! I swam several laps in the beautiful calm waters to get this one.

Trophy 18: Deep dive

Official Description: “Jumped headfirst into the water from a high point”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1429

Ugh! Back to climbing the skyscraper. There’s a spot to jump off that unlocks this trophy.

Trophy 19: Comfy

Official Description: “Respawned on couch in Skyscraper”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1430

The plunge from the spot in the previous trophy kills Kay, but she respawns on the couch for another trophy. I love two-for-one-action achievements!

Trophy 20: Raver

Official Description: “Got grabbed by waterhands 10 times”
Type: Silver
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1431

The waterhands are in the level with Sunny’s drama. And once again, I got Kay killed a bunch of time for a trophy.

Trophy Unlocks 21-23

Trophy 21: Bottled

Official Description: “Collected all bottles”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1432

Unsurprisingly, getting all the messages in the bottles was worth a shiny trophy.

Trophy 22: Flock of Seagulls

Official Description: “Shooed all Seagulls”
Type: Gold
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1433

And finally, the last seagull I needed was on the post-game lovely island in Kay’s real world.

Trophy 23: All Done

Official Description: “You have collected all of the other trophies.”
Type: Platinum
Earned on: December 4th, 2020
Overall Earned: #1434

We can all conquer our demons! No matter how hard things get, there’s always a path to find that leads to calmer waters. Or something inspiring like that is probably the point of the narrative.
