Amiibo Addiction, Part 2: No Harm in Five More!

Welcome to part 2 of me documenting my Amiibo addiction collection! It wasn’t a full-blown addiction to the little plastic NFC figures representing beloved video game characters at first. Slowly gathering them was a great comfort during the cold Canadian winter of 2015. The next 5 were added to my collection innocently enough; just Amazon order addons and a game store visit on a business trip.

Amiibo #5: Kirby (Super Smash Bros. Series)

Released: November 21st, 2014
Chronological Smash Bros. Series Release: #11

Aw, Kirby! I love the little pink puffball. I have fond memoires of getting lost in Kirby’s Dream Course with my mom one summer. Good times! It definitely makes sense Kirby was included in the Wave 1 launch. The cute factor alone was more than enough for me to add it to an Amazon order. An adorable Amiibo and free shipping? Yes, please!

Kirby’s first Amiibo certainly captures the essence of cute. I love the expression and the sitting down on the Smash Bros. stand pose. The only major complaint is a big seam on the back of the figure. No one can see it on my shelf though so no biggie!

Amiibo #6: Donkey Kong (Super Smash Bros. Series)

Released: November 21st, 2014
Chronological Smash Bros. Series Release: #4

The mere mention of Donkey Kong triggers Donkey Kong Country music and sound effects to play in my head. That was another beloved gaming experience from my childhood, eh. The stubborn gorilla’s first Amiibo entry from Wave 1 found his way into my collection as another Amazon order addon.

I love the tie details on this one! It definitely captures the spirit of the iconic DK tie flowing in the wind. His fur details seem good enough for the plastic medium. It’s not easy to sculpt hair in plastic, I imagine. The box art screams DK vibes as well. It’s a banana-like colour I’m sure DK would enjoy!

Amiibo #7: Diddy Kong (Super Smash Bros. Series)

Released: December, 2014
Chronological Smash Bros. Series Release: #14

If I have Donkey Kong I better get his little buddy Diddy, right? That was my justification, anyway. That and how much I love Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64, of course. Diddy’s Smash Bros. Amiibo was part of the Wave 2 launch. And yep, an Amazon order addon for this little monkey too.

The most adorable thing about this figure is his Nintendo hat. So cute! His whimsical expression captures Diddy’s mischievous nature quite well. I’ll ignore that yellow support structure people always pick on OG Link for. Diddy’s main clothing items are red so the red box art matches him nicely!

Amiibo #8: Mario (Super Smash Bros. Series)

Released: November 21st, 2014
Chronological Smash Bros. Series Release: #1

These are Nintendo figures so I better get the iconic plumber Mario, right? That was my excuse, anyway. Of course, Mr. Mario was part of the Wave 1 launch and entered my collection via an Amazon addon. Amazon was a huge enabler of my addiction it seems.

I love how they designed the fireball action from his Smash Bros. pose. It’s so cool and is pretty sturdy on the figure! The paint job on his eyes seems a tad off to me, but otherwise it’s a wonderful representation of Mario. Red box art works well for the plumber in red! The flame art for his fireball is also lit.

Amiibo #9: Yoshi (Super Smash Bros. Series)

Released: November 21st, 2014
Chronological Smash Bros. Series Release: #3

Mario’s sidekick Yoshi was obviously also a part of the Wave 1 release. Yoshi’s Island was another beloved childhood game of mine so getting this one was another from-the-heart impulse buy. Unlike the others in this post, I got Yoshi in a EB Games (now known as GameStop Canada) while on a business trip to another city.

It’s such a cute detail to have Yoshi’s feet naturally hanging over the stand. It’s almost like fourth wall figure breaking. I love how it looks like Yoshi casually strolling away from an epic disaster. The differing shades of green on the box art pop nicely. How could I resist buying this when I saw it physically in a store? Well played, marketing departments.
